Acquisition of Flow Systems

Morrison is pleased to announce the acquisition of Flow Systems from Brookfield on behalf of a consortium of existing clients.

Flow Systems is an innovative multi-utility business with existing operations in residential water and embedded energy networks in New South Wales and Queensland.  Flow Systems' model is based on the integration of intelligent water and energy solutions with traditional supply sources to improve customer outcomes, delivered via an in-house retail platform to residents in stand-alone high rise and broadacre communities.

According to Mark Mudie, Executive Director, Morrison & Co, the investment provides a unique platform to address water scarcity and decarbonisation issues at the community level. "We are attracted to Flow Systems' track record of partnering with developers, body corporates, councils and regulators to implement water and energy schemes that deliver improved economic and sustainability outcomes for its customers.”

Flow Systems' core water utility service includes drinking water, recycled water, and wastewater services.  Residential water customers use up to 70% less drinking water than average through the use of localised water recycling infrastructure to treat wastewater and other sources of water within the community, including stormwater, which is recirculated within the community for use on gardens and lawns, for washing down equipment outdoors, for toilet flushing, clothes washing and air cooling.  Recycled water is not subject to water restrictions, giving Flow Systems’ communities secure water supply all year round.

Flow Systems’ energy customers benefit from optimisation of the community’s energy needs and opportunities, including investments in energy efficient infrastructure and demand management technologies such as smart meters and embedded generation and storage.  In many cases, Flow Systems also provides bespoke thermal networks which utilise centralised plant to provide communal heating and cooling to residents in an energy and cost-efficient manner.

Terry Leckie, founder and CEO, Flow Systems, says "Flow Systems’ new owners share our vision for the future and provide us with the strategic and financial support to take advantage of increasing disruption in the provision of essential services, including energy and water.  Our goal remains to be the utility that innovates, inspires and creates communities of the future."

Flow Systems currently operates eight state-of-the-art local water centres, including the world’s largest in-ground residential water centre at the internationally-renowned Central Park in Sydney, with capacity to provide wastewater and recycled water services to c.20,000 customers, alongside an embedded energy business that has c.30,000 customers.
